Airport expansion project

Transport and Infrastructure
The expansion of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport marked a major milestone in the development of African airport infrastructure. Commissioned in 2019, this project increased the airport's annual capacity from 7 to 22 million passengers, making it one of the most significant hubs on the continent.
The program involved the construction of a new 86,000 m² Terminal 2, the 16,000 m² expansion of Terminal 1, and the creation of a 6,000 m² VIP terminal. Designed to enhance the traveler experience and streamline operations, the facility incorporates state-of-the-art equipment: advanced security systems, self-service check-in kiosks, automated boarding gates, premium waiting areas, duty-free shops, and numerous passenger-dedicated services.
Completed between 2015 and 2019, this large-scale project, financed and built by China with an investment of $363 million, has supported the rapid growth of air traffic in Ethiopia while positioning Addis Ababa as a strategic hub for international connections across Africa.
