Swimming pool renovation

Building
A century after it was built for the 1924 Olympic Games, the Georges Vallerey swimming pool has undergone a major renovation led by AIA Life Designers. The goal: to preserve the building's architectural identity while adapting it to modern needs and standards.
Launched in September 2022 and completed in March 2024, the project combined heritage restoration, technical modernization, and functional improvements. Stripping, concrete repair, equipment upgrades, and circulation compliance work have transformed an aging facility into a more comfortable, accessible, and high-performing space.
The building's signature retractable roof has been fully restored to maintain its innovative character and allow swimmers to enjoy natural light and fresh air.
The project also stood out for its commitment to sustainable construction and upcycling: part of the existing timber framework was repurposed to create furniture and signage, while a new eco-certified Douglas fir structure was prefabricated in a workshop and then assembled on-site.
Water and air treatment systems were modernized, while the reception areas, lighting, acoustics, and circulation paths were redesigned to improve the user experience and operational efficiency.
Completed in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the renovation of the Georges Vallerey swimming pool demonstrates that it is possible to evolve a historic building without sacrificing its identity, by balancing heritage, performance, and new uses.
