GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds or Large Heavy Ion National Accelerator) is a very large French and European research facility. Mezzoteam was chosen as the collaborative working solution for work undertaken as part of Spiral 2.
Work on Spiral 2 (Radioactive Ion Beam production system – 2nd generation) began in January 2011. The GANIL site (located in Caen, Lower Normandy) hosted the linear particle accelerator. The architectural approach was determined by the one-off nature of the project and its constraints. QSE (Quality Safety and Environment) standards were taken into account during design and construction. The main issue of the build was in its ability to accommodate the accelerator and enable it to operate in optimum conditions. Spiral 2 almost doubled the surface area of the GANIL facilities, going from 11,000m² to approximately 20,000m².
