Line A of the Toulouse urban area metro is a completely automated, driverless line, remotely monitored by a centralised control station located on the Basso Cambo site.
The line is approximately 12 kilometres in length and includes both underground and overground sections. It is made up of 18 stations, with varying geometrical configurations. The “Line A – Operation at 52 metres” development involved making changes to line A so that it could be operated with 52-metre long trains and to improve safety on the structures (tunnels and stations) and accessibility. A preliminary project had already been run in 2001 and this was relaunched by the organising transport authority in 2006.
It should be noted that this development was especially complex due to the fact that it involved changing the operating conditions of a metro line whilst continuing to uphold continuity of service obligations. A frequent train service was maintained whilst the safety of the line was guaranteed.
